Although initially voluntary in most cases, drug addiction, is a disease; one that is complex, chronic, and progressive. Drug disorders are a unique paradox. Often genetic and environmental factors are key elements in why many choose to abuse drugs. A person suffering from mental health issues may attempt to use drugs to mask the mental health symptoms from which they are suffering. By the same token, drugs rapidly alter brain chemistry and therefore have tremendous residual effects-and one may develop a mental health condition after prolonged use. An individual suffering from two conditions occurring simultaneously would be considered dual diagnosis. The substances that are common in those who receive a dual diagnosis include a range of drugs, such as heroin, crack cocaine, meth, marijuana, alcohol, or opioid. Other common mental health conditions coupled with substance use disorders are as follows: Anxiety disorder ,Major depressive disorder , Personality disorders, trauma-related disorders.
The New Alpha is one of the few facilities that actually offers long term structed living for dual diagnosis clients. Many places offer a temporary solution for a clients that may perhaps have had a psychotic episode; however, evidence has shown that shortly after, If not immediately after attending a short terms treatment facility of either 30, 60, even 90 days, clients tend to relapse; therefore negating the entire treatment which they have undergone. Many of our guests are voluntarily placed in our facility but a large majority are mandated by a judge’s order for a term of no less than 12 months. This long-term structure aids largely in the guest's recovery and gives them a head start on their new path.
We know that the path to recovery is not a short one. Many individuals abuse drugs for several years, and in turn, it may take several years to fully recover from the trauma of this abuse. We know that there is not a preset timetable for when a person will reach maximum recovery. Our approach works because we allow the necessary time to truly recover. Statistics have shown that there is a high recidivism (tendency to return to bad habits) rate for persons who undergo a short term treatment program for substance abuse disorders. Through our tenure, we have found that guests are more successful from having long-term support to combat the trauma and abuse they have experienced. A brain that has been altered by years of drug abuse and habitually destructive lifestyle choices requires years of recovery. The New Alpha is one of the few facilities in the nation that offers long term and structured housing to support their recovery. Ultimately, our goal is to provide our guests with the supportive foundation necessary to fully recover.
